Orchid Society!

Today I went to my first Orchid Society meeting and had a wonderful time!  I'm really starting to delve into orchids more, aside from just growing/collecting them and have really enjoyed learning about them.  I recently joined the American Orchid Society to access their literature and get some really neat magazines in the mail.  I reached out to my local Orchid Society and found out that they were super local to me (only about 15 minutes away).  I met a lot of really great people today and sat in on a talk presented by Tyler Currey on mounted orchids.  I have to admit, mounted orchids are very pretty but I'm not entirely sure that I have the capability to try that style yet.

All of the orchids I have in my collection seem to be quite happy in the environs I have them in now, so maybe once I get a bit more adept and the resources to keep a mounted orchid happy, I'll try it.

During the talk today, the speaker expounded more upon different ways that orchids grow.  Epiphytes (grow on trees), terrestrial (grows on forest floors) lithophytes (grow on and in crevices of rocks), xenophytes (grow in the desert - dry sandy minimal rain/moisture), bog orchids (grow in bogs) etc and we examined several photographic examples of orchids in situ (or as they grow in their natural habitats).  Looking at my collection of orchids, I have mostly epiphytic orchids, a lithophytic orchid and a couple of terrestrial orchids.  I feel like most of your standard types of orchids you find for sale either in grocery stores or home improvement stores are going to fall into your epiphyte category.

Members brought in specimens from their collection for display and rating.  I saw so many neat orchids, most of which I haven't seen before.  The room absolutely smelled heavenly from the fragrance of the orchids.

They had a selection of orchids that were donated to the society to give away for free.  Most of them were in the Oncidium alliance.  I brought home three and I'm excited to see what they do in my care!

I have added these orchids to my collection spreadsheet:

The three orchids I brought home were:

Brassidium Shooting Star 'Black Gold' HCC/AOS
(Brsdm. Gilded Urchin x Brs. Edvah Loo)
When in bloom, the flowers will look like this:

Oncidium Sharry Baby 'Sweet Fragrance' AM/AOS
(Jamie Sutton x Honolulu)
When in bloom, the flowers will look like this:

Maxillaria Tenufolia 'inferno'
I'm unsure of the exact details of this orchid other than its a coconut orchid.
The tag says cross x inferno with Elmores sweetheart underneath that.
When in bloom (the best I know as of right now) it will look like:

I'm looking forward to what I'm able to learn from the orchid society and getting to know more people who share a love of orchids as much as I do.
